The main role is to sit-ups strengthen abdominal muscles.

Done right, sit-ups can increase the flexibility of the abdominal muscles, but also can receive the protection effect of the back and improve posture.Conversely, if carried out properly, sit-ups is not only a waste of time, or even detrimental.

The correct method of sit-ups
According to Stamford (1997), sit-ups the correct way is as follows:

The body lying on the mat, knee flexion 90 degrees, feet flat on the ground. Do not put feet on the ground fixed (for example, according to the ankle by a companion hand), or the thigh and hip flexor is added, thus reducing the workload of the abdominal muscles. Furthermore, straight leg sit-ups will add to the burden on the back, easy-to-back damage.

According to the decision itself, abdominal strength and position of both hands placed as the more close to the head with both hands, to sit-ups will be more strain. Beginners can handle by the sides of the body, when adapted or improved physical fitness, they can handle cross affixed to the chest.

Finally, I will try to put in the head and the back hand cross, but each hand should be placed on the shoulders of the other side of the body.
